Thirty years old and yes I am adopted

I know there must have been a time in my life that I was able to have a conversation without mentioning that I was adopted, but lately I seem to be having trouble with it.  After the "I was adopted" comment falls out of my mouth I realize there is no need for a thirty year old woman to mention this during an everyday conversation, yet there I find myself doing it again.  Old friends expect this kind of comment from me, but new folks I encounter are caught off guard.  They tend to give me a very serious look when most of the time I am looking for a laugh.  Over the weekend I had yet another incident.  We were out celebrating a friend's thirtieth birthday.  One of our friends brought his new girlfriend, and this is the poor soul I dropped the "I was adopted" line on.  A discussion started on what Dallas is known for- the Dallas Cowboys, JFK, and the classic television show Dallas.

In retrospect I should have nodded my head in agreement, but instead I take the opportunity to tell one of my stories.
"Larry Hagman's  (JR Euing from Dallas) sister lived next door to my parents when I was born.  Since they weren't prepared when I was born, she brought over a baby crib to help out.  I slept in Larry Hagman's baby crib as a baby," I said.

I could have stopped here and it still would have been a perfectly normal story, but I continued.
"My parent's weren't prepared because I was adopted.  They got a call and headed up to the hospital to pick me up.  I was just a day or so old.  It wasn't like I was an orphan or anything," I said looking at the new girlfriend of my friend.  She starred at me with a confused look and somewhat sad eyes.  It was obvious she didn't know how to react and I don't know what kind of reaction I was expecting.  As soon as I said it I wish I hadn't.  Once again, lesson learned.  Try and control my adopted mouth.

  1. That's a cool story about the crib! Larry H. lives in Ojai, CA now. One of my best friends is from there and her family knows him really well.
As for the adoption comments. I wouldn't worry about it. If that bothers people then they need to get over it.
